In the Wilderness I Came Upon an Altar to an Unknown God;
I Made My Sacrifice Accordingly
No voice called out: you came to me in a vision
Drenched and shaking, the light carves your figure—
A form given wholly to grief
A grace or an affliction,
A purity or a witness
Cure me
Let me see the marks death made
Let me see the work of ages—
For I am corruptible and you will corrupt me yet
You will be the engine of my ruin
You will flood me
And though your loving hands may tremble
I will guide them to my throat
Yet should those hands falter
Should they arrive
Bearing neither gift nor curse
It will be asked:
What has he given?
What has been given but loss?
What voice is given to what cannot be held?
Speak and be done with it
Speak and be rid of the violence of memory
It came to me in a vision:
I dreamt you spoke the name of the void

For all their sacred constructs
And all their beautiful machines
They kneel and weep
They know not how a body can suffer
In the dark that follows
I doubt we will be forgiven
